When questions about life and existence start eating away at your mind, answers will not be found in the physical world. The Hermit seeks answers alone and inside, his emotions and desires no longer drive him. For true wisdom to emerge there can be no distractions - even a small preoccupation will be felt as a shout to the Hermit. After his period of awakening, the Hermit may indeed return to the world, but changed and as a teacher to help others to wake up.
The symbols n this image represent all the major religions, no particular one is the only way, the golden thread of Truth is hidden in each one. The cave symbolizes the period of retreat, and the candles and books represent enlightenment and wisdom.
A Course In Miracles perspective.
It is only through changing our mind that we can change the world. We need a systematic series of lessons, and willingness to recondition minds lost to illusions.
